WhatsApp Business banned or restricted: understand the block and request a review

WhatsApp has blocked your Business number. Permanent ban, temporary restriction or unofficial app: here is how to tell which, and how to appeal.

WhatsApp Business banned or restricted: understand the block and request a review

Being hacked and being banned by WhatsApp are very different situations. In the first, someone took your account. In the second, WhatsApp decided your number can no longer use the service, usually because it believes the account's activity breaks its terms. For a Moroccan business that sells and gets paid on WhatsApp Business, both are serious, but the response is not the same. Based on the WhatsApp Help Center, this guide explains how to identify the type of block and how to request a review.

Identify the message you see

The message shown when you open the app tells you what is going on:

  • "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" with an option to request a review: that is a ban. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours.
  • "Your account is restricted right now" or "may be restricted soon": a temporary restriction that lifts on its own.
  • "Temporarily banned": often linked to using an unofficial app or harvesting data.
  • "Account locked due to inactivity": re-register the number quickly, or the account and its data may be deleted.
  • A new-device message or an unknown verification code: that is not a ban, it is probably a hack. See recovering a hacked WhatsApp Business account.

Ban: how to request a review

If you believe your WhatsApp Business account was banned by mistake, the official procedure is in the app:

  1. Open WhatsApp Business and tap Request review.
  2. Submit the request. WhatsApp notifies you in the app once a decision is made.
  3. Check the status by reopening the app.

Three rules to know, all stated by WhatsApp:

  • No review option means the decision is final. If the button does not appear, the ban cannot be appealed.
  • Contacting WhatsApp through other channels does not speed things up, including from someone else's account. Only one number is reviewed per appeal.
  • No third-party service can unban an account. Only WhatsApp can ban or lift a ban. Be wary of anyone offering a paid "unlock".

While banned, you cannot access your chat history or backups. They become available again if the number is unbanned. A banned account also loses its Meta Verified subscription, with no refund if the ban relates to a policy violation.

Why WhatsApp bans business accounts

WhatsApp bans accounts whose activity it believes violates its Terms of Service, the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy or Meta's Commerce Policy. The causes cited in the Help Center:

  • Spam and bulk messaging: unsolicited messages, broadcasts to numbers that do not know you, unauthorised automation.
  • Scams or activity that puts users' safety at risk.
  • Items prohibited by the Commerce Policy (certain medicines, weapons, regulated products, counterfeits).
  • Unofficial apps (modified versions of WhatsApp) and automated harvesting of numbers or profiles.
  • A reassigned number: if you use a new number, the previous owner may have broken the rules and caused the ban.

Temporary restriction: wait and correct course

A restriction is not a ban. WhatsApp says no action is needed: it ends automatically when the time is up, and a notification tells you. Meanwhile, you can keep messaging contacts and groups you have already chatted with, but you cannot start new chats, create groups, add members or use linked devices.

To see the time remaining, start a new chat with a contact you have never messaged: a pop-up shows the duration. A restriction signals activity that looks like spam, automation or bulk messaging. It is a warning: the same behaviour can lead to a ban.

WhatsApp Business app or WhatsApp Business Platform?

If you use the WhatsApp Business API (WhatsApp Business Platform), through a provider or a CRM tool, the procedure is different: WhatsApp Support does not handle those bans. Violation details and appeals are managed from the Meta Business Help Center and the WhatsApp Manager in your business portfolio. Your technical provider should be able to help you there.

Avoid being blocked again

  • Only message customers who contacted you or agreed to receive your messages. Keep a record of that consent.
  • For group messages, use broadcast lists with contacts who saved your number, or the WhatsApp Business Platform for large volumes.
  • Avoid tools that send messages automatically from the standard WhatsApp Business app.
  • Only use the official app, downloaded from the Play Store or App Store.
  • Check that your catalogue complies with Meta's Commerce Policy.
  • To automate replies safely, use compliant solutions: see AI WhatsApp chatbot for business.

A reassuring note from WhatsApp: receiving many messages at once, for example after a boosted post, does not cause a ban. Mass, unsolicited sending is what causes problems.

Plan for the unexpected

Even with flawless use, a review can take time or end in a refusal. A business that depends 100% on one WhatsApp number is taking a risk. The answer is a continuity plan, detailed in selling and getting paid on WhatsApp: the backup plan. And to review your tools and access, our managed services are here. Let's talk.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a WhatsApp Business ban review take?

WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. You are notified in the app once a decision is made.

I don't see the Request review button. What now?

According to WhatsApp, that means the ban is final and cannot be appealed. You will need to use another number and follow the usage rules.

Can a paid service unban my WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp is explicit: only WhatsApp can ban or unban an account. Services promising an unban for a fee should be avoided.

Can I get my conversations back after a ban?

Not while the ban lasts. If the number is unbanned, you can access your backups again after verifying the number.

Can an ad that sends me lots of messages get me banned?

No. WhatsApp states that receiving many messages at once does not lead to a ban. The risk comes from sending unsolicited messages in bulk or automatically.
