What is a forward deployed engineer (FDE)? Meaning, role and why it matters for AI
A forward deployed engineer embeds with a customer to make technology work in the real world. With AI agents, the role has become essential. Here is what it means.

A forward deployed engineer (FDE, sometimes *forward deployed software engineer*) is a software engineer who works as close to the customer as possible, often inside their teams and on their systems, to make a technology work in a real setting. Instead of shipping a feature to thousands of anonymous users, the FDE solves one organisation's specific problem, in code, until the solution runs in production. With the rise of AI agents, the role has gone from niche to one of the most sought-after profiles in tech.
Where the term comes from
The term was popularised by Palantir, which sent engineers directly to customers to adapt its data platform to their needs. The phrase borrows from military vocabulary: a forward-deployed unit is positioned close to the front line. The idea is the same: rather than waiting for the customer to understand the product, you send an engineer who understands the customer.
Enterprise software vendors later adopted the model, followed by AI model providers and agent platforms, who found that a model that shines in a demo is not enough to create value at a customer.
What a forward deployed engineer actually does
- Understands the customer's business: processes, data, tools, regulatory constraints and real pain points.
- Picks the use case that creates the most value, not the one that makes the best demo.
- Writes production code: integrations with the CRM, ERP or document stores, data pipelines, AI agents, interfaces.
- Deploys in the customer's environment: security, access rights, hosting, monitoring.
- Drives adoption: trains teams, gathers feedback and adjusts until the tool is genuinely used.
- Feeds learnings back into the product or the internal team, so the next solution ships faster.
Why the role is booming with AI
A language model works wonders in a chat window. Inside a company, it has to read messy internal documents, call tools under access controls, follow business rules, give verifiable answers and fit into an existing process. That is where most AI projects stall: at the prototype.
The forward deployed engineer closes that gap. They know an agent's quality depends less on the model than on what you plug into it: the right data sources (see RAG explained), the right tools, the right guardrails and serious evaluation. We walk through that method in how an FDE ships an AI agent to production.
FDE skills
Technical
- Strong software development (often Python and TypeScript), APIs, databases.
- Language models, RAG, agents and tool calling, answer evaluation.
- Enterprise system integration and automation (for example with n8n).
- Security, access management and data protection.
- Production operations: deployment, monitoring, running costs.
Human
- Listening, and turning a business problem into a technical spec.
- Clear communication with non-technical stakeholders.
- Autonomy and comfort with ambiguity: requirements sharpen as you build.
- A bias for outcomes over technical perfection.

FDE vs consultant vs solutions engineer
An FDE differs from a consultant because they write and ship production code, and from a sales or solutions engineer because they stay after the contract is signed to make the solution work. We compare these roles in detail in FDE vs solutions engineer vs consultant.
Does your company need an FDE?
Large enterprises hire FDEs in-house or get them from their vendors. For a small or mid-sized business, hiring this rare profile is often hard and expensive. The alternative is a team that works in a forward deployed way: embedded with your people for the project, accountable for production. See hire an FDE or outsource.
Our approach
Our AI agents service works on this principle: we start from your processes and data, build the agent in your environment, measure it on real cases and support your teams through adoption. Tell us about your use case and we will tell you what can realistically run in production, and how soon.
Frequently asked questions
What does FDE stand for?
FDE stands for forward deployed engineer: a software engineer who works closely with a customer, often inside their teams, to design, integrate and ship a solution to production in that customer's context.
Who created the forward deployed engineer role?
The term was popularised by Palantir, which placed engineers at customer sites. It was later adopted by other enterprise software vendors and by AI companies.
Is a forward deployed engineer a consultant?
No. A consultant recommends, an FDE builds. They write production code, integrate it with the customer's systems and stay accountable for the result in production.
Why are FDEs in such demand for AI?
Because AI agents are easy to demo and hard to deploy: internal data, tools, access rights, evaluation and adoption need an engineer who understands both the technology and the field.
