Website Maintenance: The Monthly Checklist for a Fast, Secure Site
A website is never “finished”. Here are the checks to run every month to avoid outages, security holes and lost Google rankings.

An unmaintained website degrades quietly: outdated plugins, forms that stop delivering, slower pages, broken links. The problem is rarely visible straight away, but it costs you clients. Here is our monthly checklist.
Security and backups
- Check that automatic backups run and that a restore has actually been tested.
- Update the CMS, theme and plugins after checking them on a staging environment.
- Remove unused plugins and user accounts.
- Check the HTTPS certificate and its expiry date.
Performance
- Measure Core Web Vitals: Google considers an experience good when LCP is under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms and CLS under 0.1.
- Compress new images and use modern formats such as WebP.
- Check that recently added third-party scripts aren't slowing the site down.
SEO
- Review Google Search Console: indexing errors, excluded pages, queries going up or down.
- Fix broken links and add the redirects you need.
- Check that the sitemap is up to date and new pages are indexed.
Conversion and forms
- Send a test message through every form and check it arrives (email, CRM).
- Test the key journeys: contact, booking, checkout.
- Check conversion tracking in your analytics tools.
Content
- Update details that change: prices, opening hours, team, offers.
- Review your most visited pages and improve those that convert poorly.
- Publish or refresh at least one useful piece of content for your clients.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a WordPress site be updated?
Security updates should be applied quickly. For everything else, a monthly pass tested on staging is good practice.
How long does monthly maintenance take?
For a brochure site, a few hours a month is usually enough. An e-commerce or feature-rich site needs more testing.
What happens if a website isn't maintained?
The risk of security breaches grows, the site slows down, features stop working and Google visibility can drop.
