You don't need expensive tools to spot the most serious SEO problems. This checklist walks you through it in about an hour.

DIY SEO Audit: 12 Things to Check on Your Website Yourself

Before spending on SEO, it helps to know where your site stands. The most serious problems are often easy to spot: a page not indexed, a missing title, a slow mobile site. Here are 12 checks you can run yourself with free tools.

Indexing and technical basics

  1. Is your site indexed? Search "site:yourdomain.com" on Google. Your important pages should appear.
  2. Is Search Console set up? If not, do it first: it reports indexing errors and shows your searches.
  3. Is a sitemap submitted? Check /sitemap.xml and its status in Search Console.
  4. Is the site on HTTPS with no security warnings and a single version (with or without www)?

Mobile experience and speed

  1. Is the site comfortable on a phone? Readable text, easy-to-tap buttons, nothing overflowing the screen.
  2. Are key pages fast? Test them in PageSpeed Insights, mobile view. See our guide on slow websites.

Content and tags

  1. Does every page have a unique title tag that includes its main topic?
  2. Does every page have a single, clear H1 that says what it offers?
  3. Are service pages detailed? A three-line page can't outrank thorough competitors.
  4. Do images have alt text describing their content?
  1. Are your pages linked together? Articles should link to services, services to contact.
  2. Is your business consistent everywhere? Same name, address and phone on the site, Google profile and directories.
