AI Agents

AI Agent vs Chatbot: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

Chatbot, assistant, agent: the words get mixed up. Here is what really separates them, and how to know what your business needs.

AI Agent vs Chatbot: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

"Chatbot", "AI assistant" and "AI agent" are often used interchangeably. Yet they describe very different tools, with different costs, risks and benefits. Understanding the difference keeps you from buying too much, or too little.

The rule-based chatbot

It follows a script written in advance: menus, buttons, keywords. Type "delivery" and it shows the planned answer. Simple, predictable and cheap, it quickly frustrates as soon as a question leaves the script.

The AI assistant (conversational)

It uses a language model to understand free-form questions and write natural answers. Connected to your documents (RAG), it answers with your information instead of generalities. It informs, but doesn't act in your systems.

The AI agent

An agent goes further: it uses tools to complete a task. It can check stock, create an appointment, update a CRM record, send a quote, chain several steps and decide the next one based on the result. It's a digital teammate that gets things done, within defined limits.

Concrete examples

  • Rule-based chatbot: show a store's hours and address.
  • AI assistant: answer "is your course suitable for a beginner who works evenings?" from your programme documents.
  • AI agent: qualify the request, check seat availability, book the session, send the confirmation and create the contact in the CRM.

How to choose

  1. A handful of repetitive questions? A simple chatbot or a good FAQ may be enough.
  2. Varied questions whose answers live in your documents? An AI assistant with RAG.
  3. You want to automate tasks end to end? An AI agent connected to your tools, with guardrails.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI agent make mistakes?

Yes. That's why its allowed actions are limited, sensitive steps get human approval and every action is logged so it can be checked and corrected.

Is an AI agent more expensive than a chatbot?

Usually yes, because it must be connected to your tools and tested on real scenarios. It can also save far more time by automating complete tasks.

Can we start with an assistant and grow into an agent?

Yes, and it's a recommended path: start by answering questions, then add actions step by step once answer quality is proven.
